Pistachio research in Iran began in 1960 with the establishment of a laboratory for research on pests and plant diseases in Rafsanjan. At the end of 1992, In order to concentrate all pistachio research activities in Iran and according to the order of the Minister of Agriculture, preparations were made for the establishment of a pistachio research institute. Pistachio Research Institute was established in 1993 with six research departments in Rafsanjan, which is the most important pistachio growing region in Iran. With the establishment of the Horticultural Science Research Institute in 2016, it was renamed into the Pistachio Research Center and the number of research departments was reduced to three departments. This research center has several laboratories engaged in genetics, plant breeding, pests and plant diseases, Water, soil and plants, aflatoxin, and food industry as well as three research stations in Kerman province, including stations number one (Naserieh), station number 2 (Rafsanjan) and Kerman station. Damghan (Semnan), Qazvin, Ardakan (Yazd), and Feizabad (Khorasan Razavi) pistachio research stations are also operating under the technical and research management of the research center.
